What is always free

Capturing thoughts, by typing or by voice, is free and unlimited on every plan, including without one. So is everything you do with your own words: your ledger, editing a thought, setting evidence states, keeping its history, making commitments, adding them to your calendar, running a weekly review from what you have already written, and exporting everything you have.

What a plan pays for is the assistant: the actions where a thinking model reads your thoughts and writes something back.

What counts as one AI action

Each of these is one action, whatever the length of the thought it works on:

  • Analyzing a thought, including analyzing it again after an edit
  • Web research on a thought
  • A run of pattern discovery across your ledger
  • Generating a weekly review
  • A proofread, including re-running it after more edits
  • A first draft, or later a redraft
  • Writing a letter, or rewriting it
  • A message to one of the assistants — the turn is counted as you send it

An action is only counted once the work starts. If a request never reaches the model, because there was nothing to work on or something failed first, it is handed straight back and does not come out of your allowance.

Talking to the assistants counts the same way: one action for each message you send one of them. They always count, even on a plan where you run the assistant on your own provider key, because the assistants use the app's own model.

Prices and allowances are the ones shown on the plan page when you buy, and those are the terms of your purchase.

How the monthly count works

  • The month is the calendar month. Your allowance is counted separately for each month and starts again on the first day of the next one.
  • Unused actions do not carry over into the next month.
  • The count is per account, and it is shared across all of the action types above, so five free actions might be five analyses or a mixture.
  • The app shows how many actions you have left. When the allowance is used, AI actions pause and you are offered an upgrade; nothing you have already written is affected.
  • The count is checked on the server each time, so an action taken on one device is seen by the next one.
  • A yearly or lifetime plan includes the same monthly allowance, month after month; paying for a year or once does not make it larger.

Running AI on your own provider key

If you are on a paid plan you can save your own AI provider key, from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google Gemini. Your analysis, patterns, reviews, proofreads, drafts and letters then run on your own provider account, and those actions are not counted against your monthly allowance, because your provider is paying for them.

Two things are the exception. Web research needs the app's own search-grounded model, and so do the assistants, so research actions and every message you send an assistant are always counted. Your key is scrambled at rest, is only ever used for your own actions, and is never shown back to a browser. You can remove it at any time, and the app's own model takes over again.

Unlimited use

The app owner can hand an account a free stretch of unlimited use, for example while something is being tested with you. While it runs, nothing is counted or capped. The app owner's own account is unmetered in the same way, so the person running the app can never lock themselves out of it.

Fair use

The allowances above are for one person thinking, which is what they are priced for. They are not a way to buy bulk model capacity. In particular:

  • One account per person. Please do not share an account so a group can spend one allowance.
  • Do not use an account as a general-purpose AI service, or resell or redistribute what the assistant produces as a service of your own.
  • Do not run scripts or automated jobs against the app, beyond the assistants you have deliberately connected as yourself.
  • Do not try to get around the monthly count or the access checks.

Where use is far outside what a plan is for, we may ask you to move to a suitable plan, slow the account down, or suspend it. We will tell you before we do, unless the use is endangering the service or other accounts.

Buying, changing and cancelling

You can upgrade at any time; a change of plan takes effect from the point the plan page says. Cancelling a subscription stops it renewing and keeps your access until the end of the period you have already paid for, at which point the account returns to the free allowance. A lifetime plan has no renewal and nothing to cancel. What you have already written stays readable and exportable whatever your plan.
